So what is Exceptional 3D Auto-stereoscopic 3D or Glasses-Free 3D Technology

 

What is 3D?

To understand Glasses Free-3D one needs to first know what 3D is, 3D is based on the way the human brain and eyes work. Because a person’s eyes are about 2” (5 cm apart), each eye views a scene from a different angle and generates a unique image. Therefore, each eye sees the world from a slightly different perspective, and the binocular vision system in our brain uses the difference to calculate distance. Our brain has the ability to correlate the images it sees in its two eyes even though they are slightly different which allows us to experience 3D.

To see 3D with no glasses, Exceptional 3D uses a technology called lenticular, which is a structure of micro-lenses that is made into lenticular sheet that we bond to front of LCD or LED display, different pictures are projected into your eyes. This allows you to see 3D.

 

What is Auto-stereoscopy?

Auto-stereoscopy is any method of displaying stereoscopic images (adding binocular perception of 3D depth) without the use of special glasses on the part of the viewer. Because glasses are not required, it is also called "Glasses-Free 3D"

 

Auto-Stereoscopic 3D display technology

There are 2 types of Auto-Stereoscopic 3D technologies mainly represented in the marketplace a parallax barrier or lenticular display.

A parallax barrier is a device placed in front of an image source, such as a LCD display, to allow it to show a stereoscopic image without 3D glasses. Placed in front of a normal LCD, it consists of a layer of material with a series of precision slits, allowing each eye to see a different set of pixels, so creating a sense of depth through parallax in an effect similar to what lenticular printing produces for printed products. Parallax barriers darken the screens correspondingly to the number of hidden points of view. Increasing the number of views disfavors this technology.

As opposed to lenticular lenses technology that delivers the full brightness of the screen, regardless the number of points of view. The screen displays two sets of the same image. The lenses direct the light from the images to our eyes -- each eye sees only one image. Our brain puts the images together and interpret it as a three-dimensional image.

In the case of Exceptional 3D we use lenticular technology which show three-dimensional images instantly, with eyes seeing a different image through a high precision lenticular lens fitted onto the LCD or LED panel, creating a fully natural sensation of depth and POP off the display.

Our multi-view 3D display uses optics to render two or more views of a scene, which the viewer’s optical system fuses into single 3D image.

In the lenticular lens, an array of cylindrical lenses directs light from alternate pixel columns to a defined viewing zone, allowing each eye to receive a different image at an optimum distance. See image below

How we create 3D lens for a display

Exceptional 3D produces each of our lenses by using cured UV lighting which gives us less disturbances in the lens. We can fine tune the lens better as we use photo masks for the UV curing that we can reiteratively refine. After successfully creating the lens design and replicating a lenticular lens for a certain panel, tablet or phone, we then bond the lens i.e. LCD, LED panel.

This process is very technical and determines the quality of optics of 3D lens performance. The screen displays two sets of the same image. The lenses direct the light from the images to our eyes -- each eye sees only one image. Our brain puts the images together and interpret it as a three-dimensional image.

 

How we create our Glasses-Free 3D Solution

After years of R&D in the field of 3D optics Exceptional 3D solution is a unique proprietary combination of specialized hardware, firmware, optics, software and content all working together in sync to the sub pixel level of the panel. Our multi-layered optical solution consists of specially designed lenses bonded to our 4K panels. The 3D optical technology directs light from the sub-pixel level at an optimal angle to create a 3D image for the human eye.
